PRICELESS INFORMATION! March 27, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I BOUGHT THIS LITTLE GEM, ON THE RECOMMEDATION FROM MY LAST EN PLEIN AIRE INSTRUCTOR, KEN DeWAARD. HE HAS TAUGHT ME MORE, IN HIS WEEK WORKSHOP ABOUT PAINTING, THAN I HAVE LEARNED FROM ALL THE WORKSHOPS I HAVE TAKEN DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS. AND THE BASIS OF HIS TEACHING METHOD? HE WORKS TO PASS ON ONLY THE "PEARLS" OF WISDOM, LEARNED FROM MANY OF THE PAST MASTERS, WITHOUT CLUTTERING YOUR MIND WITH ALOT OF NOT-SO-RELEVENT INFO. [HE TOLD ME THAT MOST OF HIS QUOTES COME DIRECTLY FROM CARLSON'S BOOK!] ....THE ENTIRE CLASS OF SEASONED ARTISTS CLAIMED THAT, BY THE LAST DAY, THEY HAD GROWN SO MUCH IN ABILITY AND UNDERSTANDING, THAT NO ONE WANTED THE CLASS TO END. SO, IF YOU ARE NEW AT ART, BUY THIS BOOK AND KEEP IT, UNTIL YOU HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO UNDERSTAND THE JEWEL THAT IT IS. .... ITS BITS OF ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, BUT ITS NOT A PICTURE BOOK.. ANYWAY, I'VE DONE COMMISSIONED PORTRAITS FOR 30 YEARS. AND YET, WITH THE COMPACTED INFO IN THIS BOOK, AND BY PAINTING THE NATURAL COLORS OF OUTDOORS, I AM FINALLY STARTING TO GROW AS AN ARTIST.
A Classic and for very good reasons March 22, 2008 Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting is simply the best all-around reference guide for anyone (beginner to professional artist) interested in mastering landscape painting. Every time I pick up this book I learn something useful regarding making creative, finished paintings. While the writing style is a bit dated, if the reader accepts this as part of the book's charm, it's an easy read. The final chapter is a wonderfully inspiring gift from a master artist.
Fantastic information November 9, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read my copy of this classic many times and make notes in the margins each time I read it. I get something new out of it each time. As mentioned in other reviews there are only black and white reproductions. However, I am more a fan of Carlson's insights into painting than I am of his paintings themselves so for me the lack of color doesn't mar the overall impact of the book. This is one book every landscape painter must read.

This is a must read for all landscape painters who want to get deeper into their understanding of nature and her effects. This book is geared to the realist painter. There are several diagrams which support what Carlson teaches.
No color in a painting book? September 23, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is a good book from an excellent artist. The book would have been more useful if it had colored pictures and lessons in color mixture and schemes.
