A great introduction and referrence for pastel painting. March 13, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book a number of years ago and find myself referring to it over and over. The author covers a lot of ground and does so in an even handed manner, not stressing his own preferences to the detriment of other artists' points of view, e.g. using fixative. (He shows the same fairness in his book on oil painting by the way.) However, this is not a "step by step" book on how to make set example paintings. Those who are looking for specific by the numbers instruction and hand holding may be disappointed. There are a number of works available that do this, but they do not have nearly the depth and breadth of this book. The only problem I have with this work is that it needs updating especially in the materials area. Time for a new edition!

Wondeful! The Amazon art books in two words: inexpensive and carefully selected.
great overview January 18, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found this book to be very helpful as a reference for pastel materials and techniques. As a beginner pastel artist, the world of pastels and papers can be very overwhelming, and here he provided a wonderful breakdown of the characteristics of each well-known brand.
Excellent Book July 25, 2006 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I found Pastel Book very helpful because it covered different types of pastel (soft, hard, oil), brands and many pastel techniques.
Great for all levels of pastel artist! March 13, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
When I read this book, it was so fascinating, I couldn't put it down. The author explains and demonstrates everything so clearly, starting with the materials, basic techniques and working on up to new techniques. Even experienced artists will find the material comparisons handy. The demonstrations are easy to follow. A very thorogh but readable book. The best I've found on pastels.
