Great little book! November 19, 2008 I have a lot of watercolor books, trying to get the hang of it. I bought this book today because it seems to cover everything and rather simply, but concise info. I really am enjoying it. I actually bought it to take with me on trips as it is small, lightweight and will fit into my sketch bag. Anything I might need help in painting is in this little gem of a book. You won't be disappointed with it.
Don't let the size fool you, October 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This little book contains a lot of nice reference material. I use it in addition to other books. I believe this to be one of the best beginner's book I have seen so far in as far as it covers flowers, people, sea, or anything you can think of. Most other books generally specialize in just one subject and are at times still rather sketchy. You will definitely get your money's worth.
excellent tutorial September 8, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Alwyn Crawshaw is an excellent instructor. I had a few of his older HP series of books and used them to learn the basics of watercolor. His books give emphasis to pictorial instruction rather than long text dialog. His writing is clear and concise and he really does communicate well. His 2000 book "Watercolor" [Smithsonian] is a marvel. Beautiful little tutorials that will really improve your style. He works in the English landscape style with a fairly muted, but nice, landscape palette. His works really "sing" and seem to strike a chord of wistful nostalgia. You cannot go wrong with this book and it will grow along with your improvement as an excellent reference. Buy this book and you will also enjoy Alwyn Crawshaw's excellent tutorial and instruction. Thanks Alwyn!
