Among the first books to provide art students with instructions for correctly drawing perspective outlines, this classic reference clearly demonstrates the principles of light and shade by revealing the effects of common daylight, sunshine, and candle or artificial light on geometrical solids. 13 plates of illustrations.

2 out of 5 stars More a pamphlet than a book   February 11, 2008

The by-line of this book should have been my clue to its antiquity. I don't mind resources that are a bit older (i.e. "classic") but this particular title suffers from the verbosity so fashionable in it's day yet so annoying now. It just too text heavy. Using words to teach light and shadow is like using ducks to teach chemistry...in other words, ineffective. This is a concept best explained through illustration and while there are some here, there isn't enough and they aren't very effective. It's just not presented well for a simple minded novice like me. It is a reasonable pamphlet, but not a great book.

I have had to re-read this little book over and over to fully grasp the nature of light explained in it. It is a good little reference book to have, however it is one that needs to be re-read several times to really understand what is being explained. I still need to re-read it some more! The language it is written in is a little out dated but still it is worth picking up if you are serious about your art.
