Product Description
Many artists find the move intoabstraction a difficult and uncertain one because they lack the proper guidance needed to take this bold step. In this inspirational workbook, award-winning mixed media artist Claire Harrigan leads painters towards non-representational painting through the use of color. Fantastically illustrated throughout and featuring sound technical advice, it covers every aspect of abstract painting, from concepts and influences, inspirations and starting points to approaching subjects, basic design considerations, and surface textures. Step-by-step analyses of Harrigan?s own work demonstrate the importance of color contrast, harmony, and impact in a range of mixed media.

Inspirational Color December 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Abstract and Colour Techniques In Painting by Claire Harrigan is an inspirational book, especially for those who want to be freer and more adventurous in expressing themselves in color. Harrigan gives many examples of her own paintings which she then talks us through in terms of the choice of color and design, interacting elements and the available techniques and media. Basically her approach is to have an idea of what she wishes to express in a finished work but not to have a detailed plan or fixed idea of what the end result will look like, as she believes that this does not allow for imagination and spontaneity to come through in the finished painting. If this is an approach that appeals to you, or you want to be freed from a tendency to rigidity in your own work, then this book should help you to free up and think along different lines.

Opened My Mind to New Way of Painting May 29, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
As an 'emerging' artist and someone who is only starting to try more abstract and different ways of painting I found this book stimulated my thinking. I have found that looking at painting from a different perspective has improved my end results. This book is one I can read many times to push me to try something different.
Inspiration for any artist's shelf May 27, 2008 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is not a 'how to' book so much as a 'make you want to' book. Packed with juicy, colourful images it's sure to make any artist feeling stuck or bored want to grab some paint and paper and get going again. I think this book is a useful addition to any artist's bookcase, whatever their preferred style or medium.
