Amazon.com Review PBS painting star Jerry Yarnell follows the success of his beginner's lessons in Painting Basics with intermediate painting projects in Painting Inspirations. Yarnell reviews some basic terms and techniques; presents his materials list (as in volume one, he uses a limited but effective palette); explains glazing, an important skill for acrylic artists; and speaks to his mixing technique. The bulk of the book contains 10 complete paintings presented in Yarnell's popular step-by-step method. The compositions feature several landscapes in predominantly cool tones, such as a squirrel perched on a gnarled tree in a purplish, fantastic winter storm; a lonesome fence jutting across a cloudy lavender sky and soft green foliage after a rain; and a solitary lighthouse emitting a hazy beacon of yellow light against the deep blues of a crashing ocean and evening sky. Some of the techniques Yarnell explores include back lighting, the use of negative space, monochromatic effects, and discovering the exhilaration of fearlessly employing pure color. As usual, Yarnell intersperses his straightforward instructions with friendly advice: "You will want to do some experimenting with both brushes and different consistencies of paint. Each of us handles this kind of detail work very differently. The secret, however, is the consistency of the paint and the pressure applied to the brush." --Mary Ribesky

A good instruction book December 31, 2008 This is one of my favorite instruction books. I love sunsets. Can't quite figure why anyone would trash it like one of the other reviews on this book. Personally I think I need Gods help to achieve a likeness of anything I paint. I'm not a "natural" and I can't remember key mixes for colors so I rely on books like Jerry's to give me bought talent. I don't expect a book to make me a artist by any means. I'm fascinated by anything I do that has a semblance to Jerry's work. I think I'm ahead of the game. Duffer
God! March 27, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
How disappointing. According to Jerry, painting is a "god given" gift. He would not be able to paint without god's help. If god is all-powerful then if I were gifted from god to paint I wouldn't need this book. If I'm not gifted by god to paint then why bother? And again I wouldn't need this book.
I think I'll buy a book by a mere mortal so I can learn how to paint. : )
Painting Inspirations Vol 11 February 18, 2003 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This book is by far the best art book I've owned as far as the very detailed step by step instructions it gives for each painting right down to the colours to mix and the brushes to use. Highly recommended.
