5 out of 5 stars Both ways you win.   August 1, 2008

There are 2 reasons why anyone would buy a book such as this; either for instruction, or simply to see the paintings. As one besotted by watercolour, and a long-time admirer of the paintings of Lucy Willis, I ordered the book for both reasons. And on both accounts it proved to be an excellent buy.

England has a long tradition of watercolour painting. Broadly speaking, two methods of watercolour painting seemed to have evolved there: the more traditional approach of successive washes (usually starting off with a first wash applied to dampened paper) finished off with (touches of) brushwork. This style is particularly suited to the gentle, subtle and soft-edged English landscape, and is the forte of artists such as Trevor Chamberlain and David Curtis.

Lucy Willis favours a more direct style of painting (usually onto the dry paper) resulting in fresh and spontaneous work; ironically more suited to the vibrant, sunlit scenes of these travels (to Africa and the adjoining Mediterranean, as far as I can tell.) Which is not to denigrate the paintings of the English surrounds in the least. The studies of domestic subjects were an equal delight to me.

Besides the lovely, vibrant paintings the book contains many tips and hints for the intrepid outdoor painter. If you are toying with the idea, this book will bolster your resolve. But if you, like me, are still studio-bound, well, remember what the Moody Blues used to say (all those years ago); thinking is the best way to travel.. And in this regard the book will also assist. It certainly inspires one to think about the act of painting, and then to paint.

Strongly recommended.
