Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The acrylics of today have grown into the most adaptable art material of the modern age. Focusing on a popular art medium that has been around for over 50 years, The New Acrylics illustrates how artists can create lush textures, color, and luster with the modern acrylics readily available in any art supply store. These are nontoxic, environmentally sound, and exist in the most dazzling array of chemical formats-from the most fluid to the highly viscous. Not only do artists paint with acrylics these days, they can create rich metallic effects, or even 3-dimensional sculptures. Traditional technique based books on acrylics cover traditional methods of painting. However, The New Acrylics is geared toward more nonconventional ways in which to manipulate modern-day acrylics, and demonstrates new applications such as glazing, textured effects, soft sculpture effects, or staining, thus reinventing the old way of handling acrylics, and revealing a fabulous new artistic medium. The underlying theme of this dazzling and sophisticated book is to encourage artists to interpret and handle acrylic paints in a vibrant, fresh, and above all, individualistic style.

5 out of 5 stars Beginning Painter Here!   December 31, 2008
As a beginner painter of acrylic medium, I needed a solid book of reference to enhance my classroom painting. I was lucky enough to land myself in a class with a professor who shares the same philosophy of art that I do; he started us off with still-life compositions, limited pallatte and optical illusion excersises, but then he released us into our own creative directions - once we had the basics down. He also encouraged us to go out and "see" art; as it is not the same to merely glance at art on the Internet. Seeing an actual art piece at a museum or art gallery is akin to inspriation because one "see"s the paint strokes that create the image on canvas, or wood or brass. It is interesting to learn that all sorts of paints can be used to create all sorts of imagery. Seeing watercolours, oils as well as acrylics works is vital to grasping greater knowledge about one's abilities to put paint on canvas. Our little world of acrylics is the best, in my humble opinion, because the paints are so stable, dry fast, and can be repainted over and over if the artist wishes to do so.
What is also interesting is the tools that one can utilize to "paint" such as brushes, which are the most predictable and basic types of tools - but also one can be challenged to paint with palette knives, foam daubers, airbrush apparati, rollers and other graining tools, such as chunks of wood. One can boost creative expression by attempting to paint by fork, knife or spoon. Improvising is also daunting; on page 42 the idea of putting acrylic paint inside of a pastry bag and pushing it through a standard frosting tube is introduced and - yes - I will try this technique in the new year! What fun that will be!
Painting is fun; it is a farther extension of who I am as a person who cares about beauty in this world and I also care about my fellow man.
Painting is all about color - painting is all about the paint, because paint is emotion. Painting is symbolism and metaphor, and it takes patience and a long time to bring emotion to the eye of the beholder.
I love this book and plan on re-reading it tonight!
It is an extremely popular book in my area in regards to the formal study of painting; I was happy to get it at the Amazon.com discounted price of $16.00 / such a deal!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of ways to use acrylic paints!   December 12, 2008
I enjoyed seeing the ways that acrylics can be used with different mediums to accomplish special effects. It was very interesting how "sheets" of acrylic paint were cut and used as mosaic tiles and so on.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to see how acrylics are used beyond painting in watercolor or oil painting styles. It really made me think about new ways to use the paints I have in my drawer!

5 out of 5 stars acrylics   November 3, 2008

this book is so glossy. i love the photos and the techniques it displays. it makes you appreciate acrylics. I haven't encountered another book like this. it is NOT about how to paint better. As i see it, it has to do more with how to manipulate acrylics to create beautiful surfaces. it also has a lot of info about the kind of acrylics. if you want to know more about acrylics i highly recommend it!
what is more, i like this positive approach toward acrylics, because really it is so dull having people underestimating the material.

5 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration   October 6, 2008
I'll be honest, I'm not too interested in the scientific and chemical blah blah blah of acrylic paint. But this book provided a great inspiration and exposed me to a lot of mediums I never knew existed. Highly recommended for the technical and the eye candy.
