Product Description Colored pencil artists are gaining respect in the art world. This book approaches colored pencil work in the same manner as oil/acrylic painters work; offering instruction on how to plan and work on the entire painting at once. The result is a more cohesive, finished painting. Rich colors are a desirable result for most artists. The techniques of creating a tonal underpainting and layering colors have been used by master artists for centuries. This book, which uses complementary colors for the underpainting, allows the contemporary colored pencil artist to tap into that tradition used by the Masters. There is no other book that approaches color in this manner for today's artist. Opposite or complementary colors create contrast and vibrancy. Masterful Color is loaded with instruction on how to layer colored pencil effectively to create deep, vibrant colors that exude richness. Readers will learn how to layer these complements over one another, creating rich shadows and adding depth and dimension to their paintings. With extensive coverage of basic techniques, detailed information on composition, color theory, textures and more, colored pencil artists will learn everything they need to achieve rich, vibrant colors by layering complementary colors. 17 demonstrations show readers the various techniques needed to use this approach and an extended final demonstration leads them through the entire painting process, step by step.

A different approach, using color theory December 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book has the usual hallmarks of being good for beginners - advanced. It has the line drawings in back, it lists the pencils and colors used and has the photo progression from start to finish. It uses the new Prismacolor colors too. It uses color theory more heavily and shows a different approach for layering using the complementary colors which I happen to like. Either way, it's a fresh view of colored pencil technique.
Great technique for colored pencils December 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm new to colored pencils, and was looking for a book to teach me. After going through several, I bought "Masterful Color." I am using the lessons as if I were in an art class. I am amazed at the results. The layering process is almost magical. You start the painting with complementary colors (eg. start a tomato with green.) I don't know how it works, but it sure does. The paintings are absolutely vibrant. The last lesson is to make your own masterpiece. I'm working forward to getting to that. I'm having so much fun painting with colored pencils. I've already been commissioned to do a painting.
Great book for my HS art classroom December 13, 2008 Clear instructions and excellent photos. My art students refer to this book again and again when working on their projects!
Typical Art Book December 7, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Typical Art book. Not really for beginner water color pencil artists at all. The book goes from: materials needed - 2 pages of applying colored pencil - 2 pages of blending and burnishing. The beginner is then whisked on to Chapter 2. Composition, fruits, flowers, jugs, the usual art book. Coloring a sphere or more basic tasks to build up confidence should have been the next step. I think if you are truly a beginner, using this book might not lead to a sense of accomplishment, which is then accompanied by a loss of energy and interest as is typical of some beginner books, which like this one is a portfolio of the author and her accomplishments.
So - so instruction. October 19, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Not as detailed as I had thought. A little more basic, would be good for a true beginner.
